It depends on how long you are not going to use it. I would recommend that if you are not going to use it for more than 24 hours then to shut it down.
Otherwise, leaving it on Stand By is best. Stand By prevents sudden surges of power going through your PS2 (or TV, Video, etc) - i.e. it keeps a steady current going through it. If you were turning it on and off many times during a day then you could possibly do harm I guess. So instead you knock it on to Stand By. But also you shouldn't leave it on Stand By unecessarily. As I said, my general rule of thum is if it's gonna be longer than 24 hours then I'll shut it down. - S |

Personally, I shut it down only if I know I'm not going near it for at least three hours. Otherwise, keep in on standby.

A power surge is when too much electricity flows through. It'll blow out all of you're electical items like computers.
It usually happens when lightning hits.

its common sense really if your going to be playing it again soon then standby is best but if you going to have a logn break say the next day before you play it again id recomend shutting it down.
Hope its helped

i just read a thread today posted at another board concerning this very same topic..in it the person says that he recently called sony, because the ps2 he owns started acting odd..he was afraid there was a power surge that may have messed it up..anyways the person at sony said that if you're going to leave the ps2 alone for a long period of time they used school as an example the best thing to do is shut it down..so i'm going to start doing that today..i've had mine since launch and have shut it down like 10 times since i bought it.
