Actually, here is the timeline on what happened with that whole pricecut:
1. MS announces that to boost sales across the world, they will start cutting prices on all xbox's. Rumors spread that US boxes will be 200 bucks.
2. When Sony was asked if they would be lowering the PS2 price they said No, because they had no reason to.
3. All of the sudden, a few days before MS was supposed to cut their prices, Sony suddenly and unexpectedly dropped their price.
Seems that sony realized that they couldn't compete with a 200 dollar XBox. That was a devious marketing ploy to try to make it seem that MS is dropping price just to match sony. when in fact it was the other way around. Kudos to sony on that, though. They beat MS to the punch and pulled a lot of hype their way. And no matter what system is technically better, hype is what it is all about in the end.
