All age groups should get their own video game hero. Will Snake die in MGS4? It has to be a possibility, I mean Kojima almost seems to be preping Raiden for something... But sooner or later Snake is going to die anyway. It's probably far better that he goes before the game falls in danger of going stale like you said... I'm still not sure with the Tomb Raider comparrison though, simply because it's a series that I have always felt was stale with the very first sequel. The difference between the reaction to the Whiners between MGS and TR is that Kojima productions has never worried about them all that much whilst Core pandered left right and centre and cookie cut their games from the beginning. Even if Kojima leaves, I have faith in the team to keep the series to a good quality, and wind it up at an appropriate time. After all, there is only so long that the series can even feasibly go on for. The timeline is pretty damned full
