I watched
Shiki-Jitsu some time ago. It's based on a novel by the lead actress of the movie - who is, don't laugh, the daughter of actor Steven Seagal
- but the screenplay is Anno's. It shares some resemblances in themes with Anno's NGE - loneliness, death, rejection, denial, etc. - and some of the parts in which characters talk to each other or to themselves are good. Overall it's not a bad film. The thing I disliked more about it was the acting. It was quite poor IMO. The man - Japanese director Shunji Iwai - is completely expressionless, but that could be ok, since the character could be intended to be like that. The girl though is really annoying, especially in scenes where she's supposed to be facing crises or inner turmoil. She can't do that.
On a note: I saw Anno as actor in a movie whose title is
Cha no Aji by Katsuhito Ishii. Actually his role is just a cameo appearance, so better don't look for it if it's for Anno. The movies is bizarrely enjoyable. It's a nice watch.
