EA’s next Bond game to be based on GoldenEye

Quote:

Much to the delight of gamers everywhere Electronic Art’s next Bond game will be based on the 1995 movie GoldenEye. Yes, the same movie that inspired one of the greatest first person shooters and N64 games of all time, created by the masterminds at Rare.

Interestingly enough, EA will not employ the services of UK developer Free Radical Design for their new Bond game despite the fact that Free Radical is made up of former Rare employees. EA has stated that the Bond franchise has been and will continue to be handled by their Redwood Shores and Los Angeles studios, and that their agreement with Free Radical is limited to the next installment in the TimeSplitters franchise.

Other than that little tidbit of information, EA has remained very tight-lipped about their plans and would not even provide final confirmation that a GoldenEye title is being worked on. At this point it is not even known whether it will be a direct sequel, a rehash of the N64 hit, or a totally new idea built around the plot of the movie.

According to Gamesindustry.biz, the plan is to unveil the new GoldenEye at E3 as one of the key titles on display at the EA booth. You can rest assured that we will be there to bring you the latest and greatest news on this exciting announcement as it unfolds.

All I can say about this is - 'EA, what the hell are you doing?!'. As much appealing as a new Goldeneye is (and believe me, it is) you shouldn't tamper with a classic. Obviously it will have very little or no connection to the original, but if this game flops the name is tainted.

Tread carefully EA, the world will be watching...

that's odd gamespot is saying free radical has a deal with EA. What does "a deal" mean though? ..i wish i knew for sure. If free radical doesn't have any input into this game i won't be anticipating it.

gamespot- Numerous sites ran Gamesindustry.biz's article, which says GoldenEye redux is being developed at EA's Redwood Shores and Los Angeles studios. That would be surprising, because EA has a deal with Free Radical Design, the UK studio where most of the original GoldenEye team works. Nevertheless, Gamesindustry.biz quotes EA as saying the new GoldenEye might be the first of many 007 remakes, saying "we were going to exploit past, present and future Bond properties across a range of gaming platforms." When GameSpot contacted EA officially, we got the above non-response from Lee, who said the real news was the release of EA's newest bond adventure, Everything or Nothing, next Tuesday. ("I think that's the story the public is crying out for," he said.) However, unofficially, sources within EA refused to deny the existence of a GoldenEye remake--which is about as close to a confirmation as you're likely to get these days.

maybe the deal was just for the publishing rights to Time Sliptters 3.

After weeks of speculation, the publisher announces a sequel to the N64 classic. In a twist, the spy actioner will let gamers become Bond villains.

Ending a flurry of rumors, Electronic Arts announced today that a sequel to the classic N64 James Bond shooter GoldenEye is in the works. Development of the game is already under way at EA's Los Angeles studio, and the game due on "multiple platforms" this fall.

"We look forward to continued success with this fall's release of a new chapter in the Bond saga and the creation of another blockbuster franchise in GoldenEye 2," said Travis Rutherford, senior vice president of MGM consumer products and interactive. MGM produces the James Bond film franchise.

While the existence of James Bond 007: GoldenEye 2 was something of an open secret in the industry, EA's announcement surprised many. In a twist that's sure to thrill anyone who has ever rooted for the bad guy at the movies, GoldenEye 2 will let "players become the ultimate villain in the Bond universe," according to EA President and COO John Riccitiello.

GoldenEye 2's story will follow a British secret agent who is dismissed from MI6's "00" program for "reckless brutality." Like the fallen spy played by Sean Bean in GoldenEye the film, players will soon enter the underworld. Eventually, they will link up with Auric Goldfinger, the villain from what many consider the best 007 film ever, Goldfinger. The game's goal will be to seize control of the "world's greatest criminal organization," which is presumably the S.P.E.C.T.R.E. crime syndicate. GameSpot will have more details on the game as they become available.
