about the ps2 power

is it true that the ps2 games that have come out now have not been using the ps2 full power.

and if so does it have more potential graphic wise or gamewise

Thanks for helpin me out im still debating which system to get but i am leaning towards the ps2 mainly because of the games.

Mercury Shadow Jun 11th, 2002 09:12 PM

It's true games coming out today aren't using PS2s full potential. I'm not sure what exactly will change, but I'm sure once developers get used to the PS2 and technology and new ideas improve, games will become faster and better quality on ps2.

Ice Cold Jun 11th, 2002 09:57 PM

Yes I believe Mercury is right.

Not as if I'm complaining or anything. PS2 graphics are great, but developers still haven't hit PS2's full capability. PS2's gaming potential is still left to be stretched and expanded.

ludaman99 Jun 11th, 2002 10:07 PM

so does that mean that the graphics for the ps2 would increase as time goes on

Ice Cold Jun 11th, 2002 10:19 PM

I believe so. If not that new technology put to use.

Have you played Red Fraction?

ludaman99 Jun 11th, 2002 10:25 PM

no all i have right now is a psone i have not gotten a chance to play any ps2 games

Ice Cold Jun 11th, 2002 10:34 PM

I haven't played it either.

But it has a system, what I believe is called "GeoMod." That might not mean much to you but you can pretty much blow everything up. If using the right weapons you can burrow through walls and come out on different sides. It's more things like this that will be developed and make the gaming experiance better.

(Please anyone correct me if I wrong about GeoMod)

ludaman99 Jun 11th, 2002 10:36 PM

Do other systems have the same feature

Ice Cold Jun 11th, 2002 10:51 PM

To tell you the truth I don't know. I think the "Geomod" was only for Red Fraction but other games have their own little specialties like in James Bond: Agent Under Fire. There is improved AI.

That game is availible on all PS2, Xbox, and GC platforms though.

KraftSLU Jun 11th, 2002 11:10 PM

Geomod is a software tool developed by Red Faction. Other companies are coming out with their own equilvalents. Mechassault for the XBox uses this same type of feature. As for the system power, no system on the market is close to using it's full potential. As far as polys per second, I think the ps2's max used so far is around 10 million per second. XBox and GC have pushed 15. Industry analysts say that the PS2 will max at about 20-22 million polys per second, while the GC and XBox will push over 30 million. Either way, I expect to see amazing looking games from all 3 systems. I just hope someone developes an efficient anti-aliasing subroutine for the PS2 soon :(

????????????????????

anti-aliasing takes a not smooth line (like the notorious PS2 "jaggies") and smooths it over, taking away a lot of the jags. XBox and GC have 4xAntialiasing built in (hardware). PS2 doesn't. The only way to get rid of the jaggies on future PS2 games is to figure out a good software anti-alias thing.

Haha, I wouldn't say AUF had good AI...

but Geomod is great and fun to play around with. Red Faction 2 will utilize the feature to a greater extent.

ludaman99 Jun 12th, 2002 07:13 AM

have games like grand turismo 3 used at least half of the ps2 power.

Ice Cold Jun 12th, 2002 09:02 AM

Not saying I actually believed them. That's just what they say with practically every new FPS. The thing is that is what can be improved, but it always isn't.

???Have you ever played TWINE for N64???

Both the graphics AND the AI for tht game were pathetic. Oh well gotta love that James Bond.

Ice Cold Jun 12th, 2002 09:13 AM

Ludaman, my Guess is 3/4.

But if there is even more capability.........sweeeeeeet!!!!!!

ludaman99 Jun 12th, 2002 03:35 PM

does the difference of a ps2 version game compared to another version differ between the hardware or the software ?

Im assuming you mean a different verison for a different console? Well, in that case, both. All the consoles have different software setups. So if a game is written for the ps2 then its software is set up to run on the emotion engine, whereas if the dev team is going to produce the game on the XBox they have to rewrite it so it will run on the Geforce3.5 card.

ludaman99 Jun 12th, 2002 08:44 PM

is it better to have a more pc like console like say the (XBOX) will that give it more power.

KraftSLU Jun 12th, 2002 10:51 PM

LoL! Why do people keep saying that the xbox is more pc like? From what I see, you can add hardware upgrades to the PS2, the PS2 has a mouse and keyboard you can use, and the PS2 lets you connect via a modem, all of which are more like a PC than the Xbox ever will be.
