DE: Dark Sector - 1st "PS3 / XBox2" Generation Game "Announced"
Note usage of speech marks there :) (because PS3 and XBox aren't offical names, and announcements are usually a bit more significant).
Digital Extremes, Co-Developer of the Unreal / Unreal Tournament / Championship Series, as well as the forthcoming PC/Xbox title "Pariah" have released a teaser video for their long in development and completely shrouded in mystery action game "Dark Sector". Originally announced as in development as a PC game, using the Unreal Engine around 2001, the project went under-wraps and wasn't heard of for a long time. Until Now. Dark Sector has now moved to a completely new graphics engine - named "Sector" (presumeably because the "Dark Engine" copyright is held by LGS (R.I.P), makers of the Thief and System Shock PC games) it is aimed at the anticipated abilities of the Computer Systems of it's projected release date: 2006. The intention is therefore to develop a game for Microsoft and Sony's forthcoming systems, and (presumably) whatever PC graphics technology is capable of 2-3 years from now. The Trailer shows a short (but sweet) graphical sequence, with what looks like a stealth / action mix. When originally announced, Dark Sector was to be a free-form online action game (at least, this is what I remember - I may be wrong), but as the site says " Everything that you know about Dark Sector is probably wrong." Get a look at what tomorrow's games are anticipated to look like (in an early form, scaled down for today's hardware!) at www.darksector.com |
Wow...that footage is pretty impressive. Specifically the lighting effects. Its certainly interesting to catch a glimpse at what our next consoles will be capabale of
|
I don't know. I saw the footage for this game and I'm not that impressed overall. To me it didn't look much better than HL2.

You're right not to be too blown away by Dark Sector. We've seen, very little (so much, that I wonder why they've even bothered releaseing the teaser), and there certainly wasn't time to show Physics, AI and complex Character animations... But what is there does hint at more detailed environments than Half-Life 2. Those corridors looks pretty curvey, and the particles system looks fairly developed... But its still got 2 years of development to go anyway, not to mention the fact that the hardware they're developing for is more or less theoretical, so they presumably have to run it on the best of today's hardware... |

So I expect that the consoles will be as capable of the top GeForces and Radeons of 2005 and possibly 2006... |
further to my post, cheap and cheerful Half-Life 2 videos can be found at: https://ftp.sierra.com/sierra/half-life2/videos/ , Vicious...
