PSP Anyone?

Just what I was waiting for atleast. Not that Gameboy is bad or anything. But I did think that if Sony enters the handheld market. It will do some serious damage here too.

Playstation Portable has been announced by SONY (PSP) A handheld Sony system. SWEET!.!

Here the Specs..

UMD or Universal Media Device. This storage media is 60mm, about half the size of the traditional CD and has a capacity of 1.8GB. That's right GB. Expect massively complex, detailed gaming (for your handheld anyway). 2.4 inches.

ATRAC encoding support (Sony's proprietary sound format used in their minidiscs). This could mean it will be a multi-media device.

Graphics specs are also impressive: NURB technology for rendering with full 3D polygons.

The unit's widescreen LCD screen (480x272, that's the coveted 16:9 ratio we all love) will be backlit.

The unit's sound processing will feature full 3D sound, PCM, and will be "fully reconfigurable."

MIPS 32-bit processor.

Also, a secure ROM cartridge for anti-piracy efforts.

Super-one-chip solution for graphics, sound, etc.

Memory stick will be used for game saves. Also, for GPS functionality.

Rechargeable battery.

CPU: 90 nanometers with a clock speed TBD.

USB 2.0 connection for talking to your PC, cellphone, even your PS2.

Embedded RAM.

Supports additional video codecs (other than MPEG 4.)

What do you guys think?.

I think this thing is going to be awesome. It will be better then the GBA as long as it has the games. In the last handheld war the GB kicked Game Gears ass. Though it wil be coming out before the end of 2004 which means it's going to be a long wait. But as long as they have Pokemon little kids (And some older ones....) will think it is great

psp

all this rom/optical disk stuff is confusing so what is it cart or disk?

if it can match the ps1 for graphics it'll one more plus.

The new gba-sp is pretty slick.

Mmmm sega rally, PLEASE:ghost:

GaseousSnake May 14th, 2003 03:24 PM

Competition is definately nice for the market.

Thumbs up to Sony:cool:

Its the same kind of technology as the Sony Minidisc, only it will have a larger capacity.

Sounds great and I definately think as long as it's got good games it'll turn out great.

indeed, and do you know why? because the Sega Game Gear required 6 AAs and gave you a pissy ammount of playing time for that (yet was streets ahead in terms of graphics - it was basically a portable Master System, but with more colours in some games, whereas the Gameboy was...). It suddenly occured to me, that optical disks surely require some sort of mechanical spinny thingy, and therefore constantly moving parts must be there somewhere. Perhaps Sony have made no mention of Battery life for a very, very good reason.

Otherwise, a system sitting somewhere between the PS1 and the PS2 sounds like a good deal. Just hope they actually get people to develop for it...

(and GG vs GB was the war before, Neo Geo vs GB and WSC vs GB...)

Why not take advantage of the handheld market? Its the only thing keeping Nintendo alive nowadays. Once Sony sinks some serious meat into it, dont be surprised if Nintendo gets off their lazy ass and starts developing more games for their hardware instead of just having us, the gullible gamer, to buy their hardware and watch dust collect around it. If anything this will get Nintendo moving again, which would be nice...

Looks intresting for sony to ave a go at the handheld market, no pics yet of it, when I see some I might think about buying it, seeing I havent got a handheld system at te moment.

Well the battery will be rechargeable. and what would be cool is to be able to buy a second one so you can just put that one in when the other one needs recharged.

Not wars in my book. I never saw a Neo Geo or Wonder Swan over here in the states :(

Im not sure how much of an issue battery life will be. Just think of how long the new portable cd and dvd players work on just 2 double A's.

I have this weird feeling that sony is going to pound the GBA the same way as they did the N64, by saying 'screw cartridges' and going optical.

Vicious_2003 Jul 30th, 2003 04:36 PM

I myself have mixed feelings on the issue. I never did get into hand-held gaming but I certainly would have if I had the money to support it along with my console gaming habits. I agree that compotition is DEFINATLY better for the market, I just fear for Nintendo here. As someone said the GBA is basically whats keeping Nintendo alive now a days(Along with the floundering Cube). I just hope Sony doesent go overboard on this thing sinking millions into the technology so they can beat out Nintendo like they did Sega. Of course i know what youll say, "Thats the point of compotitition" and "Doesent Sony owe it to there customers to put out the best Product possible"and youd be right. Im just saying I hope these two systems can co-exist. Id hate to see Sony do to Nintendo what they did to Sega, Weather its inadvertant or not. I refuse to say goodbye to all those lovable Nintendo characters

MakgSnake Jul 30th, 2003 10:09 PM

I love Nintendo but Monopoly is never good. Something new in the market would only make the Games BETTER in quality......even better then now.

Plus PSP has Wireless link engine. That is..... unlike GBA...you dont need wires to connect games 4 players or even 2. It has wireless connection.... AWESOME!!!!!

Redpyramidhead Jul 31st, 2003 03:45 AM

I can only imagine some very amazing Castlevania games if they were to be developed for this machine:cool:

_RED_ stuff

Finally...

So Sony intends on entering the handheld market?

Good.

The PSP will certainly be a new revolution in quality, design and media from what I've read about it. Seeing the specs that dan posted this PSP looks like it will be the greatest handheld console to date. But if they are telling us, they are also telling Nintendo to buck up their ideas so it probably wont be long before Nintendo release 'new' handheld console designs. Thats how this market works. But if Sony go into this and its better than the GBA SP then software developers will be quick to link their clammy hands in a deal becasue if its going to connect to your PS2 people will want it. Maybe even Pokemon will come to it as sais before. Wouldn't it be weird if they made a PSP pokemon and a PS pokemon. Anyways - hope it works!!!
