September 12, 2003 - Electronic Arts surprised even us today with this afternoon's announcement unveiling four non-sports games that will be online-ready this fall for PlayStation 2: The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, The Sims Busting Out, Need for Speed Underground, and Medal of Honor Rising Sun.

While all four games are playable online, Return of the King, The Sims, and Medal of Honor enable players to additionally vie using the USB headset for instant voice communication.

"EA Games' online play extends the gaming experience way beyond the boundaries of your living room," said Shawn Conly, EA Games' global branding director. "It gives gamers the opportunity to play with or against each other in some of the most exciting games this fall no matter where they-or their friends-are located."

The biggest surprise was Return of the King. The sequel to last year's hit offers two-player online cooperative play for all 15 levels, and using particular game lobbies and using buddy lists, players contact and chat with friends on EA Messenger instant messaging. Any two of the six playable characters (plus three secret characters) can be selected (Gandalf, Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Sam). Online players can start at the game's beginning or, if the game's been beaten, they can select any level to begin.

This just makes Need for Speed Underground that much better. NFS Underground enables as many as four players to race online in every one of the game's driving modes: drag racing, sprint racing, circuit racing and drift racing. And, players can use their own customized offline cars in any online competition. A ranking system tracks the top 100 riders, top lap times, and, to top it off, the game enables gamers cross-platform (PC and PlayStation 2 gamers) online play. Wow.

Announced at this summer's Camp EA, Medal of Honor Rising Sun will also be playable online. Up to eight players can go head to head through nine levels and numerous options enable customizable match parameters (including Weapon Sets, Friendly Fire, and Time Limits among others) should help to please a variety of gamers. Using EA's matchmaking service, online players can select a variety of Axis and Allied soldiers, and once started, players can communicate via the USB headset team coordination.

The Sims Bustin' Out offers two-player cooperative online play, an online trading system (enabling players to swap unlockable social interactions such as Pull Finger and Moonwalk), which affects the gameplay, and a helpful icon-based lobby system including matchmaker screens.

We'll have more on all these games in the near future.
