I just received this press release while I was working on the backend; the Nintendo Revolution has a new official name: "Wii".

As in "we."

While the code-name "Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games ... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.

I am a big Nintendo fan myself, and I think the Revolution, aehm, Wii might do better than some in the industry are expecting. Nintendo made some really brave choices in the design of the console; the whole idea behind the new control system is really intriguing. As Berserker said, we must just wait and see.

wii is pronounced like "we"? Personally, I think "whye" sounds more like it. For instance, as used in the sentence: "Wii have they changed the name to something as silly as Wii?"

Not that the name of the thing matters an ounce, though I suspect people will be mispronouncing it, and Sony / MS fanboys will be making urination jokes about the poor thing until the end of time.

Yes, "wii" should sound like "we." I think it's because it goes by the Japanese spelling and pronounciation. Double i's in Japanese sound and spelling represents the extended sound of the "e" letter, especially that in the word "we."

Looking at the logo, I think Nintendo has put a hidden meaning behind it. Not only does it sound and represents "we" but the two i's look like people. You and me. If this is the case, very clever Nintendo. ;)

Oh wow, you're right...I forgot about the controllers and they really do look like them too. Neat, but it's still hard to get used to saying the Nintendo Wii console. :P
