Well look at if from a different point of view its true that both the GC and the Xbox are more powerful than the ps2 but to what extent we have seen the ps2 pull out some amazing things.

I guess it really wasnt to early because look at the lead they have now over the two other consoles. Although its life MIGHT get shortened due to newer and "supposedly" better technology.

Thats just common sense displayed by Microsoft. Shouldnt be part of a debate.

Common sense mixed with desperation over the console. It wasn't coming near where they thought it would in terms of sales, so they slashed the price 6 months in.

Actually, here is the timeline on what happened with that whole pricecut:

1. MS announces that to boost sales across the world, they will start cutting prices on all xbox's. Rumors spread that US boxes will be 200 bucks.
2. When Sony was asked if they would be lowering the PS2 price they said No, because they had no reason to.
3. All of the sudden, a few days before MS was supposed to cut their prices, Sony suddenly and unexpectedly dropped their price.

Seems that sony realized that they couldn't compete with a 200 dollar XBox. That was a devious marketing ploy to try to make it seem that MS is dropping price just to match sony. when in fact it was the other way around. Kudos to sony on that, though. They beat MS to the punch and pulled a lot of hype their way. And no matter what system is technically better, hype is what it is all about in the end.
