am a new member, hi to all.

recently bought a pre-modified PS2 (SCPH 30006 R). have no problem playing games from anywhere without swapping, but playing DVDs is a different story.

i live in japan and pick up "copies" of DVDs whenever i go on vacation. dirt cheap and great quality. after several attempts opening and closing the drive, they'll play. if i try to play it again later, have to go throught the same routine ... sometimes getting lucky, sometimes giving up at 5 minutes or so. anyway, not a good situation. don't think it's because they're copies, because i have the same problems with regular DVDs (from any zone, including the PS2's default zone). also, already have driver 2.12G installed, so pretty sure that's not it.

any suggestions?

is it something as simple as getting the new DVD code card (http://www.ps2modchip.com/search.php?page=ps5) or DVD Region X (http://www.ps2modchip.com/search.php?page=dvdx)?

if that's the case, is one better than the other? does the new DVD code card allow you to straight out play the DVD or do you still have to swap discs?

thanks.

Have you tried the diagnosis mode of the Ps2? Maybe it's simply a problem in the alignment of the lens; the Ps2 has an auto-diagnosis feature that adjust the setting of the DVD player.

Click Triangle in the main menu of the Ps2 browser (the screen you have when there are no games into the disc tray). Select Console, then click Triangle again. Set Diagnosis On then try playing your DVDs.

Let me know.

harry,

finally got it up and running. was something simple after all ... just not what you suggested.

after checking what you mentioned, noticed that my diagnosis is set to 'off.' what's the benefit of having it 'on?'

(sorry for the probably amateurish question, but just got my PS2 last week and am interested in knowing.)

thanks again. have a good weekend.

Oh don't worry about that if now is all working. Diagnosis must be used only when you have problems reading DVDs etc.

Anyhow, what was the problem?

it's kinda embarassing since it was so simple ... but the instruction manual made no mention of it. when switching from DVD games to DVD movies, need to reset (that much i knew) and hold the reset button down until the play screen comes up. about 5 seconds or so. that's it!

stumbled across this bit of info at http://www.ps2modchip.com/search.php?page=premodntsc

again, thanks for taking the time to help me out. will see you around on the board.

best of,
c
